An old outhouse sits at the top of a hill in the ghost town of Jerome, a curious Jack Rabbit pops up from the sagebrush and cactus to survey what's goings on.
Located at the base of Mingus Mountain in Arizona’s Verde Valley, the Jerome ghost town was once a bustling and slightly seedy mining town. It could have gone to dust when the mines went bust, but a determined group of locals keep Jerome alive. Founded in the late 19th century on Cleopatra Hill overlooking the Verde Valley, it is more than 5,000 ft above sea level. Jerome's history is full of stories. These stories tell how the Wickedest Town in the West got its name and how men who sought their fortunes in this billion dollar mining camp lived, played and fought. Once the fourth largest city in the Arizona Territory, Jerome boasted a population of nearly 15,000 on its hilltop haven. During its heyday, men and women from all over the world made their way to Arizona to find work and maybe a new way of life. Today, when you visit Jerome and its historic buildings, you are given an opportunity to take a step back in time, feel the past and experience life as it might have been in Arizonas rough and rugged days.
Jackrabbits (Lepus townsedii) are actually hares, not rabbits. Hares are larger than rabbits, and they typically have taller hind legs and longer ears. Jackrabbits are a common hare that inhabit American deserts, scrublands, and other open spaces, including farms. They can consume very large quantities of grasses and plants—including desert species such as sagebrush and cacti. 0523
